Incipit: Probatiō Aen I:1-11 / Interpretation (25 points; 15 minutes)
I. Translation & Scansion, Aen. I:92-101: a slide was created for ironing out the scansion particularly ll. 94-100. Why is this meter so contorted here? “Golden” phrase and chiasmos at the end of I:91 (review).
II. Exegesis & Analysis, Aen. I:92-101: epithets, specifically patronymics (father’s or clan’s names) ex. Ὰεακιδῆς (son of Ὰεακὀς = Achilles); apostrophe; infans = in +fans (for, fare, fatum sum) to speak (rf. fas vs. nefas, the holy/speakable vs. the unholy/unspeakable) νῆπιοι = νη + ἐπος; allusion (Odyssey 5, raft-building/navigating, shipwrecks, & whirlpools [i.e. Charybdis]); metonymy (fortia corpora, I:101); metaphor (praeruptus aquae mons, I:105)
ΙΙΙ. Demonstration: Cupid Shuffle. Cupid does actually "shuffle" into the narrative later in Book I!
