Quondam Abes :: 17 September 2009

Incipit: (Unseen) Aen. I:34-38 (10 minutes)

I. Translation and Exegesis, Aen. I:1-11; students have read through and translated Aen. I:1-38 (includes today's incipit).

II. Analysis, Aen. I:1-11. Terms include enjambement, elision, metonymy vs. metaphor, synchesis "interlocked word order." Chiasmus pattern: abba; synchesis/interlocked: abab. Please seek out the .ppt on the cmswebsite with other Vergil Supplements.

III. Demonstration: more dactylic hexameter and marching. Everyone is doing much better! Keep up the good exercise! ;-)

IV. Murky Point & Discussion: How to get started discussing the literary aspects. What's mystifying? What do you need to know? What do you like about Aen. I:1-11 so far? Some offerings--diction is difficult, artistry is very dense that it is hard to construe, sometimes we draw a 'blank' (more effort please!), is the musicality even important? Holy smoke, people, the musicality is indispensible!

Assignment/On the Dock for Monday 21 September: Aen. I:38-80 for Monday. Analysis, enellage. Bring your journals/binders/compbooks -- REMINDER -- or if you're working without one, let's develop a way to give you credit for evidence of work completed.

NB: You can bring in a card or other form of witness that you read the passage 3X before hitting the dictionary...and you'll get a point extra credit. Way to go, students who did so!
